ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SEXUALITY EDUCATION AMONG SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHERS IN ABAKALIKI EDUCATION ZONE OF EBONYI STATE

Abstract


This descriptive research study sought to determine the assessment of implementation of sexuality education among social science teachers in Abakaliki education zone of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.  Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study.  A total of 3,702 teachers and 19,299 secondary school students in Abakaliki Education zone were used as population size.  Out of this, a sample size of 440 (48 teachers and 440 students) were randomly selected using multi-stage sampling technique.  A questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection.  The instrument was face validated by three experts.  It was trial tested using 30 students and its internal consistency was ascertained using Cronbach Alpha co-efficient statistical method.  The result gave overall Alpha-co-efficient value of 0.85.  The data collected was analyzed using means and standard deviation while t-test was used to test the postulated null hypotheses.  The major findings revealed that both social studies teachers and students agreed that the extent of implementation of sexuality education among social studies teachers is to a great extent.  It was found that social science teachers and students agree that inadequate enlightenment programmes, inadequate counseling, poor, approach to sex education, limited published literature on sex education and students have attitude to the ban placed on sex education are the constraints to the effective implementation of sexuality education among social studies teachers.  It was agreed by both the social science teachers and students that the provision of adequate enlightenment progrmames, provision of adequate counseling, sexual orientation in all schools, and those sexuality teachers should participate in professional conferences are the strategies for improving the implementation of sexuality education among social science teachers.  There is no significant difference between the mean – rating scores of teachers and students on the extent of implementation of sexuality education.  There is no significant difference between the mean-rating scores of teachers and students on the constraints and strategies for improving to the effective implementation of sexuality education.  Based on these findings, some education implications were highlighted and recommendations made.
