THE EFFECT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF PARENTS ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SECONDARY SCHOOL ECONOMICS STUDENTS IN ABAKALIKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EBONYI STATE
Abstract
This study examined the effect of socio-economic status of parents on the academic achievement of secondary school Economics students in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. One hundred students were selected randomly across five randomly selected secondary schools in Abakaliki Local Government area. From each of the randomly selected schools, the researcher selected twenty students using stratified and simple random sampling technique. A number of related materials both of empirical and theoretical importance were reviewed. This study adopted a descriptive survey method and made use of questionnaire in facilitating data collection. The statistical description (such as mean and standard deviation), ANOVA and SPSS methods were employed for the analysis. Based on the result obtained, there is a significant effect of socio-economic status (viz: level of income, family size and educational background) of parents on the academic achievement of their children and wards. Moreover, recommendations were made for teachers, parents, students, governments and curriculum developers on ways to improve academic achievement of students
