SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND POVERTY REDUCTION IN NIGERIA: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS
Abstract
Sustainable Development Goals was an extension of Millennium Development Goals initiated in the year 2000. The SDG’s are a bold commitment to achieve the objectives of MDG’s including end poverty in all its forms and dimension by the year 2030. This involves targeting the most vulnerable, increasing basic resources and services, and supporting communities affected by conflict and climate-related disasters. Unfortunately in nigeria, poverty is on the increase despite with the implementation of the SDG’s programmes when compared with the 1960’s. There are so many factors associated with increasing poverty rate in nigeria including corruption, debt burden, rising unemployment rate especially among youth, overdependence on oil. Lack of political will to address the poverty, ethno-religious conflicts among others. The paper also accounted for the prospects and challenges of SDG’s in fighting poverty in nigeria by looking at poverty remains one of the major challenges facing the country which was not addressed and or achieved during the MDG’s. Some of the challenges facing nigeria in it effort to end poverty includes: endemic corruption, lack of effective policies, lack of accountability, insecurity, poor infrastructure among others. The paper concluded that nigeria has not made any significant and meaningful progress in achieving poverty reduction due to numerous challenges mentioned earlier. Therefore, collective and concerted effort is needed in designing a strong and reliable framework for a successful implementation and achievement of end to poverty in nigeria.
